The next morning the Met briefing made for gloomy listening. Western Norway was still under the influence of a slow moving low pressure system, and we were clearly not going to be able to fulfil our aim of going down the mountainous western side of Norway anytime soon. So we had little option but to retrace our steps through Finland and Sweden, but even that route was problematic, with frontal activity forecast. We set off from Mehamn on the morning of the 19th June, with low cloud sitting barely above the mountains either side of the fiords.

Am nächsten Morgen keine wirkliche Begeisterung beim Wetterbriefing. West Norwegen lag unverändert unter dem Einfluss eines sich nur langsam bewegenden Tiefdrucksystems; keine Chance für unsere Absicht in nächster Zeit die Westküste Norwegens herunterzufliegen. Es gab kaum eine andere Option, als die Route unseres Hinfluges durch Finnland und Schweden zurückzufliegen. Aber selbst diese Route war angesichts der vorhergesagten gewittrigen Fronten problematisch. Am Morgen des 19. Juni startete die Viking Flight unter einer niedrigen Wolkendecke die beidseitig des Fjordes auflag.

Vidar recommended we fly east over the sea, then south through the Tannafiord and then, from the foot of the fiord, follow a river valley through the high ground and into Finland, with the town of Ivalo (EFIV) as our destination. Our departure was staggered, with the first wave of 3 close together led by Jörg, then with myself and Ted van Dam 20 minutes behind; twenty minutes that were to prove crucial. We negotiated the fiord and the river valley, with the cloud just high enough to squeeze through into Finland, but as we approached Ivalo the lead group were reporting deteriorating conditions and a lowering cloudbase, with heavy rain.

Vidar hatte als Schlechtwetterroute empfohlen, zunächst östlich über das Wasser hinaus zu fliegen, dann in den Tannafjord einzufliegen, weiter am Ende des Fjords dem Flusslauf in Richtung Finnland zu folgen, um dann unser Ziel Ivalo (EFIV) zu erreichen. Unser Abflug war unterteilt, die erste Welle mit 3 Flugzeugen angeführt von Jörg, dann ich selbst und Ted van Damm 20 Minuten später; 20 Minuten die sich als entscheidend herausstellten. Wir passierten den Fjord und das Flusstal, mit einer Wolkenuntergrenze, die es gerade noch erlaubte, sicher nach Finnland einzufliegen; aber als wir in die Nähe von Ivalo kamen, funkte die erste Gruppe schlechter werdende Bedingungen mit absinkender Untergrenze und schwerem Regen.
