The Grumman Aircraft Pilots Association European Branch

The undertaking had been planned several months previously. Following the success of our 2007 trip to Morocco, the European Chapter of AYA decided that, for this year, the aim would be to fly opposite to the limits of northern Europe, aiming to meet up in southern Denmark and then fly up the west coast of Norway, around North Cape and return through Finland and Sweden. As with the previous year, Jörg put a lot of effort into the detailed planning and 5 Grummans plus a Glastar (whose owner had once had a share in a Grumman) eventually embarked on the trip in mid June.

The weather prompted a change of plan from day one. The presence of a persistent low pressure system meant that our intended outward trip through Denmark and up the western Norwegian coastline was effectively blocked, and we decided that east about was the only practical option. Thus it was that on Saturday, June 14th the Viking squadron, so our callsign, descended on the Danish island of Bornholm, situated in the Baltic Sea, half way between Germany and Sweden.

Das Projekt war Monate vorher geplant worden. Nach dem Erfolg unserer Fliegerreise 2007 nach Marokko, hatten unsere Mitglieder der AYA Europa beschlossen, diesmal entgegengesetzt an das nördlichste Ende Europas zu fliegen; beginnend mit einem Treffen im südlichen Dänemark, einem Weiterflug über die Westküste Norwegens, um das Nordkap herum und zurück über Finnland und Schweden. Wie im letzten Jahr steckte Jörg einige Arbeit in das Vorhaben, bis Mitte Juni 5 Grummans und eine Glastar (dessen Eigner noch kürzlich Anteilseigner einer Grumman war) sich schließlich auf die Reise machten.

Das Wetter änderte vom Tag eins unseren Plan. Ein stationäres großes Tief machte unser Vorhaben, über Dänemark die westliche Küste Norwegens zu erreichen unmöglich. Wir kamen überein, dass die Ostroute die einzig praktikable Route zum Nord Cap war. Am Samstag, den 14. Juni schwebte die Viking Staffel, so unser Rufzeichen auf die dänische Insel Bornholm in der Baltischen See und auf halben Wege zwischen Deutschland und Schweden gelegen, ein.

The cast had changed somewhat from the previous year. Leading us again was the Director of the European Chapter of AYA, Jörg Trauboth from Germany, in his immaculate Tiger D-EDDO. Also from Germany came Wolfgang Rieber in an equally immaculate Cheetah D-EGSH. He was accompanied by his indomitable 80 year old father Walther who, as he put it, was on his last great adventure.

Die Aufstellung war gegenüber letztem Jahr etwas verändert. Vorneweg flog wieder Jörg Trauboth, AYA Director Europe, aus Deutschland in seinem makellosen Tiger D-EDDO; ebenso in einer nicht minder perfekt ausgestatteten schönen Cheetah D-EGSH, Wolfgang Rieber. Er wurde von seinem nicht kleinzukriegenden 80 Jahre alten Vater begeleitet, der den Flug zum Cap, nach eigenen Worten, als ein letzten großes Abenteuer seines Lebens empfand.

Then came George and Mary Brown from the UK in their Glastar G-GERY, Theo von Keller in his Cheetah N 9910 U, our Dutch friends Ted van Dam Merrett and Hans Eenhoorn in Cheetah N100EA, and myself and John Collins from the UK, in my Cheetah G-JAJB.

Ferner kamen George und Mary Brown aus Großbritannien in ihrer Glastar G-GERY; Theo von Keller in seiner Cheetah N9910U aus Berziers / Frankreich; unsere holländischen Freunde, Ted van Dam Merrett und Hans Eenhoorn in Theo's Cheetah N100EA; ich selbst mit John Collins aus Großbritannien mit meiner Cheetah G-JAJB.
