The European American Yankee Association gathers at Rinteln Airfield in Germany (EDVR) for its traditional

Beer in hand, Walter Gibson had said at the conclusion of his event: "Goodbye to you all - next year in Germany." That was 2007 in North Weald (north of London), when the worst possible weather forced even the intrepid Grumman pilots to make their way to the European convention by car.

Die europäische American Yankee Association (AYA) trifft sich zum traditionellen Jahres FlyIn auf dem Flugplatz Rinteln / EDVR. Eine Reportage von Jörg Trauboth und Mike Sherer.

Walter Gibson sagte am Ende seiner Veranstaltung mit einem Bier in der Hand: „Good By to you all - next year in Germany". Das war 2007 in North Weald (nördlich London), als bei schlechtestem Wetter die Grumman-Piloten zum europäischen FlyIn mit dem Auto anreisen mussten.

One year later, Wolfgang Rieber, Country Coordinator for Germany & Poland and AYA Europe 2008 project manager, stands on the terrace of the aero club in Rinteln in the bright sunshine and watches with fascination as the approaches near EDVR from the west. There, lined up like the proverbial string of pearls, come the Grummans. "Utterly fantastic," he murmurs. Following months of preparations, a dream is finally coming true. High pressure has been dominating in Europe for days, and is guaranteed to hold for the coming event. 30 aircraft had signed up for this year's AYA Europe convention, and all of them come - together with over 80 people. The first crews already arrive on Thursday. And the meadow on the other side of the runway is nearly full by the evening of Pentecost Friday.

Ein Jahr später steht Wolfgang Rieber, Country Coordinator Deutschland & Polen und Projektmanager AYA Europe 2008 bei strahlendem Sonnenschein auf der Terrasse des Fliegerklubs in Rinteln und schaut fasziniert auf den Endanflug von EDVR nach Westen. Dort fliegen, wie an einer Perlenschnur aufgereiht, die Grummans ein. „Einfach phantastisch", murmelt er. Ein Traum wird nach monatelanger Vorbereitung wahr. Hochdruckwetter seit Tagen in Europa, mit Garantie für die nächsten Tage. Zusage von 30 Flugzeugen zum jährlichen FlyIn der AYA Europe und alle, alle kommen mit über 80 Personen. Die ersten Crews treffen bereits am Donnerstag ein. Am Pfingstfreitag ist die Wiese jenseits der Bahn abends fast voll.
